This girl has a memory like an elephant's!

We're heading to the dunes today for a day full of playing in the sand and water, and we can't wait! When we told the kids last night about what we were going to do today, they were, of course, thrilled, but it also made Caroline remember something that happened a very, VERY long time ago.

When she was 2 and 1/2.

We were at the cottages in Pentwater, Michigan for a family vacation. The cottages sit on top of dune right on Lake Michigan, and they have a patio area that has such an amazing view. Along the edge, there is a bench and railing. Caroline was sitting on that bench with some of her cousins and siblings, when all of the sudden, the railing broke. (We did no know that it was rotting.) The other kids were able to right themselves, but she went tumbling down the dunes for about 20 yards. It was SCARY. Her Daddy went running after her, swooped her up, and brought her back up to be consoled. Her cousins and siblings were especially attentive, which was very sweet. She had a few scrapes and bruises, but thankfully was ok. And for the longest time after that, she would retell the story, always starting with "Remember when I fell down the dune? Daddy saved me." Even if she had told us the story an hour before, she would question our memory of it before she would tell us the story again. :)

It has been a long time since the last time she shared the story, so I thought she might have forgotten it. However, when we told her yesterday that we were going to the dunes, the first thing she said after her "YESSSSS!" was, "Remember when I fell down the dune?"

Yes, I remember it well! Thankfully Caroline's guardian angel was by her side that day in MI.

Note to the blog editor. No pictures are showing up on my screen. There is a question mark in the center of the frame. The same goes for the sunflower picture.

mom
